I have a horrible long term memory, so I have been meaning to write down my labor story before I forget all of the details. So here goes...
It all started on Friday, Nov. 20 when I thought my water broke. I had been having pretty constant (but not regular or in any pattern) contractions for a couple of days. My nice husband had made dinner for us and we were about to eat when my water broke (so I thought). Logan was downstairs so I yelled to him that I think my water just broke. This was 12 days before my due date, so I couldn't believe I was this lucky to be early! We decided to quickly eat dinner and then we headed off to the hospital. When we got to the hospital they did a test to see if my water actually had broken. The first test came out negative, so they said they could do 2 other tests just to be sure. Well, those tests also were negative. They then checked my cervix to see if I was dilated and effaced at all. I was a "loose 1" and 50% effaced. The bad news was my water had not broken, I had just peed my pants! So, they said we could stay a while longer to see if I progressed at all or just go home and wait. We decided to go home to see what happens. I had contractions all that night and they continued on Saturday. At about 6:00 that night they started to get worse and closer together. We were planning on going to see a movie, but I told Logan I wanted to go to Walmart to walk around. We went and walked around Walmart for about an hour and my contractions were about 3-4 minutes apart and getting pretty painful. I still wasn't convinced that this was the real thing. I was super paranoid that I would go to the hospital and be sent home again. So we went home and I took a bath to see if that would make the contractions stop. Nope, still going strong. I decided to call the hospital to ask them if I should come in (just to be sure). The girl on the phone told me we should definitely come in, so once again, we headed to the hospital. I could tell I was in real labor this time because every bump we went over was painful if I was having a contraction. We got to the hospital around 10:00 pm. The first thing they did was check me to see if I was dilated any more. I was so happy when they told me I was dilated to a 4 and they were going to admit me! This is the point when we realized this was really happening and we would have a baby soon! One of the first things they asked me was if I was planning on having an epidural. My answer- heck yes! I'm not stupid- I could hear the lady next door screaming because she didn't get one. I had to wait about an hour and a half before I got the epidural. My contractions were getting worse, but with my nifty breathing techniques I learned in class, they were bearable. I think by the time I got the epidural, I was dilated to about a 6. From here on out, labor was awesome. I wouldn't say I was loopy, but I was very relaxed and very talkative. I remember I kept saying "it feels like my butt is glued to the bed"! It is the weirdest feeling not being able to feel your lower body! Once I got the epidural, they broke my water and that really got things going. From about 12-4 am I hung out, tried to sleep and Logan pretty much slept the whole time in the crappy hospital chair. I could feel when contractions came on, but they didn't hurt at all- fantastic. At about 4 am, Dr. Cox, the doc on-call came in and checked me. I was fully dilated, but they wanted me to "labor down". So, another half hour of that and he checked again. The baby's head was down, but he was sunnyside up- head facing up. So he waited until I had a contraction, had me push, and he turned baby so he was facing down. I then pushed through 3 contractions-a total of 9 pushes I believe and he was out. I seriously couldn't believe it was that easy and so quick! The doctor couldn't believe it either. He said usually with your first baby you push for about an hour or hour and a half total. I am now glad that I had a little 6 lb 9 oz baby! He told me that my husband better get a good job because if I have babies this easy, I should have a lot. Maybe...we'll see. When he was out the first thing I asked Logan was if he had any hair. We were expecting a bald baby, so we were so happy that he had some hair! Everyone said he was such a pretty baby, which I was happy about because lots of newborns are not very cute. They also commented on how he had such big, beautiful eyes. Yes, definitely big, just like his mom and dad. I thought I would be so scared to have my baby and to be a mom, but actually I really wasn't. I also thought I would cry when I had him but I didn't. I guess I was more excited to see him and a little shocked that it happened so fast! I guess to sum up my labor, it was one of the best days of my life. I couldn't have asked for things to go better. I consider myself lucky in the baby making and delivering department.
